About Michigan (MI) Lottery

Since its inauguration in 1972, the Michigan Lottery which is also known as MI Lottery continues to provide fun and entertaining games to the players and substantial income to the state. The MI Lottery supports the public school system of Michigan. Since the inception of the Michigan Lottery, it has contributed over $21 billion to the public education. $2.5 million was provided each day to the schools in the fiscal year 2017.

28% of the overall revenue goes to the funding of public schools, whereas the major portion i.e. 60% goes to the lottery players in the form of rewards and prizes. 9% of the overall revenue goes to the retailers and vendors in the form of commissions. Finally, 3% which is the lowest portion, is used for the proper operation of the MI Lottery.

The first ticket game of Michigan Lottery was started on November 13, 1972. Three years later, the MI lottery sold the first instant game ticket on October 7, 1975. On June 6, 1977, the first ever terminal-based game was introduced by the Michigan Lottery. August 13, 1984, witnessed the introduction of first Michigan Lotto game.

In-house draw games:

The MI Lottery has a wide variety of in-house draw games that are both entertaining and exciting to play. Along with the draw games, it also offers several scratch games, terminal games, and a few multi-jurisdictional games.

  • Daily 3 and Daily 4

A player needs to pick either a 3-digit number or a 4-digit number that is an exact match to the drawn number, in order to win the game. Players can optionally box their numbers.

  • Fantasy 5 + ezMatch

Started on September 12, 2004, this game replaced a former draw game which was known as Rolldown. Players need to pick any 5 numbers out of 39. This game draws daily with $100,000 as the beginning jackpot. If there’s no top-prize winner, the game’s jackpot increase by at least $5,000 per each drawing. Fantasy 5 Michigan Lottery Results televised on the Michigan Lottery show. ezMatch is a separate terminal-based game with prizes ranging from two dollars to five hundred dollars.

  • Lotto 47 + ezMatch

Lotto 47 started on May 15, 2005, by replacing a draw game called Winfall. In this game, the players must choose 6 out of 47 numbers. With jackpots beginning at $1 million, this game draws twice a week. ezMatch is an add-on game to the Lotto 47. Fantasy 5 game is drawn with the use of a Random Number Generator.

In addition to the above-mentioned in-house draw games, the MI Lottery offers several In-house club games such as Club Keno, Keno!, and Pull-tabs. There are a few multi-jurisdictional games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and Lucky for Life that are currently being offered by the MI Lottery.

How do you collect lottery winnings in Michigan ?

The table below highlights the different processes of claiming your prizes in Michigan.

A winning lottery ticket must be redeemed within a year from the day it was won. According to state legislation, any prize that is not collected within a year would be considered unclaimed and transferred into the school aid fund. You have one year to file a valid claim for your Michigan lottery winnings.

  • Prizes up to $600

    You can claim prizes worth up to $600 at a retailer. Although retailers are not compelled to pay out prizes, the majority do it as a courtesy to players. The size of the prize that some stores would redeem may also be restricted.

  • Prizes between $601 to $99,999.99

    Prizes ranging from $601 to $99,999.99 can only be claimed by appointment at a Lottery regional office or a designated claim center.

  • Prizes more than $100,000

    Prizes worth $100,000 or more must be claimed at the Lottery headquarters, situated in downtown Lansing at 101 E. Hillsdale.

    To claim a prize, each winner must bring a winning ticket, an original government-issued photo ID (usually a driver's license or state ID), and their Social Security card. Also, for the prize claim to be processed, both the names on the photo ID and the Social Security card must perfectly match.

Mail-in Claim
  • You can mail in a claim for Michigan Lottery winnings up to and including $99,999.99.

  • If you win more than $600 as an individual, you must fill out a Ticket Receipt Form, and if you win more than $600 as a club, you must fill out a Substitution 5754 form.

  • If you win a prize worth less than $600, you must fill out a ticket receipt form or send a written request for payment that includes your full name, address, and contact information.

  • Retain a photocopy or image of the front and back of the ticket, along with the completed Ticket Receipt Form.

  • Please submit the signed ticket, a copy of your Social Security card, and a legitimate government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID) with any claims. Only readable copies, please.
